Just getting going in my second season road cycling here in Canada. Last year I bought a Giant Contend because I didn't want to invest too much without know if I'd like it. Now that I'm hooked I want to upgrade.

I've narrowed it down to a 2018 Trek Emonda SL5 and a 2019 Giant TCR Advanced 2. My plan is to invest in a lower-level carbon bike now and upgrade components (namely wheels) down the road. The Emonda and TCR are very similar on paper, but I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on which one might have the edge. My thought is the stock wheels and tires on the TCR might be a bit better.

Price is roughly the same.

Thanks!

  • Both good choices I’m sure most people will agree on for the all-round front. If you’re looking to hold onto the frame for a while and upgrade it might make sense to look at the TCR Pro, comes with a composite steerer rather than an alloy one as well as even better wheels and finishing kit. The Pro 2 is a lovely black with highlights... ;)

Watching with interest as these are two I’ve had my eye on for a while.
  • I have a 2018 TCR 2 and absolutely love it. Can't really fault anything at with it, and although I'm pretty new to road cycling it does everything I want and I'm sure I'm nowhere near pushing it as hard as it can go.

The only thing I'm planning on changing in the future are the rims, the rest is spot on!
  • Thanks guys, very reassuring!
