Stuck Shimano 105 5800 shifter

I was out riding the other day when the rear shifter seized up. It’s 105 ST5800. I limped home.
Looking at it now it will shift down (reduce tension on the cable) but not go up. I’ve realised that it works when upside down so presumably something is a bit loose. I have it off and taken it slightly apart (levers off) but can’t see anything obviously loose.
Anyone seen this before? Is it dead? I have another pair on order but if I can fix it and save myself £150 I’d prefer to do that.

Is the cable frayed inside the shifter? My 10 speed 105 chews up the cable quite frequently, and if I ignore it till it's really bad / snapped it can jam the thing.0

Change the cable ASAP before it breaks.0

Not the cable. Shifter itself is broken. I ended up replacing the pair. Shifter works upside down so I suspect a small spring has failed inside. You need factory tools to take it apart (the videos above are for previous generations).0

Ah I see. Generally speaking the parts within Shimano shifters are no serviceable.0
