Cheers.

You can’t beat it for a base to strike out from. It’s stunning. This is going to be their last summer in operation before they move on to their next venture. I’ll miss the place. We’ll be there late June.0 -
Le Grand Bornand - can rent apartments at the campsite there.http://www.snookcycling.wordpress.com - Reports on Cingles du Mont Ventoux, Alpe D'Huez, Galibier, Izoard, Tourmalet, Paris-Roubaix Sportive & Tour of Flanders Sportive, Amstel Gold Xperience, Vosges, C2C, WOTR routes....0

Also look at Samoens, it's a sleepy village at almost the dead end in the valley. Lots of great iconic climbs within a day's ride.
You could also try Morzine or Les Gets.0 -
Hi, last year we stayed in Bourg d'Oisans which is in the valley at the bottom of Alpe d'huez.
Great place to stay with easy access to many iconic climbs but also a few less so. Town has plenty of bars and restaurants and a few nice bike shops.
We stayed with https://www.morethan21bends.com/ in one of their self catering chalets.
Wish I could go again this year!!0 -

A 130+ mile drive from Geneva airport...
i stayed at the top of Alp D'Huez after L'Etape last year and flew back from Geneva. It's a bit of a drive but wasnt too bad. Think it was 2.5 hours max drive and quite an easy route0 -

5 hours is quite an investment on a weekend cycling trip. Also, the subject says 'Northern Alps Recommendations', and besides, there's much more to the French Alps than Alpe d'Huez0 -
I have used these guys before to do the Morzine sportive for a weekend. They will pick up at the airport and they do a catered chalet and are flexible for days.
There is lots of great cycling from Morzine. I can give you lots of routes. e.g. Joux plan, joux vert, col de ramaz.
