Brake cable housing stoppers

Hi,

When fitting brake cables, do both ends need to have stoppers, or just the end which insert into the brake lever?

Or are they completely unnecessary?

Caliper end normally has a crimp on it. This stops the cable from fraying and separating

I'd normally say a stopper on each end as it enters the body of the caliper or the lever - though it depends on the type of brake caliper (mech disc, v brake, canti etc etc)

What do you mean by 'stopper'?
The barrel adjuster? The nipple? The end cap? The crimp?

I am referring to what larkim posted above - a plastic or metal sleeve which slides on the end of cable housing, so that it fits into the frame clips

What is the correct terminology for those gizmos?

Thanks everyone, so I guess it’s better to put one on the break lever end AND one which inserts into the mechanical breaks.

You need an end cap on each end of any run of outer cable. It stops dirt getting in, prevents damage to the end of the cable and stops the outer cable crushing the inner.
