Good Afternoon,

Need some advice would it be possible to change the rear mech on my 2018 Scott Speedster 20 from a long cage to a short one. The reason for doing this is the Tacx Flux Turbo trainer only supports small cages.

Full spec = https://www.evanscycles.com/scott-speed ... e-EV314380

Is it possible?

Thanks
Lee

You can change the derailleur. There is a short cage version of the Tiagra 4700. The problem is that you have an 11-32 cassette, which isn't supported by the short cage derailleur. You might get lucky and be able to accommodate the 32 cog using the B screw, but you still may have issues with it taking up enough chain. There's hacky ways of doing it where you make the chain too short in the big/big combo or too long in small/small (both combinations you shouldn't use anyway), but it's far from ideal.

However, if you don't need such a low gear, then you could change to an 11-28 cassette with the short cage derailleur and it will all work perfectly.

as above but you would need to shorten the chain to suit.

or just get new chain for a tenner for the new cassette and keep old cassette/chain/mech combo for a rainy day.

Thank you. I think the 11-28 with the short cage will do the job. Would the 11-25 also do the job?

    Appreciate your help :o

An 11-25 would also work fine, but obviously that gives you a significantly harder bottom gear, so you might find it difficult to achieve a comfortable cadence going uphill.
