Hi, can you use a 11 speed chainset but with a 10 speed set up?

I hope Bongo has seen this. A sensible question gets sensible answers. Well done everyone.

yes to apoint. I have this on one bike and the front shifting is not quite right. There was a problem for about 18 months where the chain used to get caught on the inner ring going down from big and pull the mech. As i am quite sensistive to these things I did not rip the mech off. If I was just a tad less senstitive I would have ripped of an athena mech and destroyed the intergrated hanger on an old Trek. Chainring wear has solved the issue.

This 10 speed record chainset (new when fitted) with 11 speed athena kit.

So it can work but not always well. In short just be a wee bit more careful when front shifting just in case.

The difference is in the spacing of the front rings. With 11sp the rings are fractionally (ie less then 0.5mm) closer together than for a 10sp chainring. If, as Malcolm did, you run an 11sp chain on a 10sp chainset, there is a small risk the narrower 11sp chain with the wider set 10sp rings might cause a dropped chain on the downshift.

For the OP I'd suggest keeping to 10sp chains as well - which will be fine with the 11sp chainset - because an 11sp chain in a 10sp front mech also adds a very small amount of slop,.
