I need to get a new chain for my wife’s bike - it’s an old-ish standard bicycle, nothing special. Will any new chain work?

The one you need is dictated by the number of gears at the back on the freewheel/cassette. 5/6/7/8 speed chains are all the same, and will generally be marketed as 8 speed. 9/10/11/12 speed all have narrower chains, and you need to use the correct chain for the number of gears.

Ah, ok so it’s a 3 speed sturmy archer type thing, not a derailleur.
