Strava down (again)

Is it just me, or is Strava getting worse for constantly having server issues?

I wouldn't normally complain if this were Facebook or some other free app, but I'm paying for this and I constantly get Data Synch fail or there was a problem connectng to the server. If they are going to charge as much as they do I'd expect them to be better at fixing issues like this. Once in a while is to be expected from a busy site with a world wide user base but it's almost every week. I know it's not me since both my laptop and phone fail to connect.

Anyone else getting the same level of issues as me?

Yep. My ride uploaded straight away from my Wahoo and I got the phone notification so I know it's there. Can't look at it though as I get a data sync error. Can't even get on home page is Strava either
  • Same . Just finished a 43 mile ride and now data sync fail.

Yep, its on a go slow. They rolled out some new feature, route creation thing, maybe that's what is causing the issue.

Garmin is down so I can't upload to Strava. I can still see other people's activities on Strava though ?
  • It's going slow/not at all for me - I assumed it was just down to high Sunday usage with people all getting home and uploading rides. Although of course it should be able to cope with that regardless....
  • Lots of panicked faces at the cafe today as people realised the ride they’d just done might not have happened

same here, so possibly they both use the same hosting service, or are in the same data centre, looks like instagram are in the same spot of bother

Strava in panic mode now Garmin have bought Tacx?
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • Strava is based in California USA, so I guess they schedule their down time to be of least inconvenience to the US market.
Hence early afternoon here in Europe. 4am in San Francisco is Midday in UK.

The Garmin website is working again now. The app was still working and gave a notice of the website being down for maintenance.

The Garmin notice only came up later. I wonder if it was a genuine service or a cock up. Anyway all good now.
  • Still slow and not all the functions working properly. been playing up for a few days now. Seems to be affecting the Elevate Chrome plug-in as well :-(
  • To be fair there was an outage at many ATM's and card pay machines this week so perhaps it is a more widespread problem.

Pretty sure there's no link between ATM's and Strava...

That would be a massive security flaw in both systems.

Not suggesting there is, just speculating that it may be more of a communication issue across many and varied applications as opposed to an issue perculiar to cycling based apps.

Getting back to my original gripe. It's not this one off week. It's getting more and more frequent. I would suggest it's more a failure to manage the large amounts of data they hold. But considering they have many subscribers to it, they should have the funds to keep it running smoothly. It truth is, they are failing on that front.

I said in my first post - if this was Facebook or Garmin or some other free to use social media site then that would be the case, but I, amongst others , ARE PAYING FOR THIS. If you pay for a service that you can't use or is glitchy are you not going to be a bit annoyed about it? Few months ago, O2 had no data services for a few days. It was like the apocalypse had come for some. End of the day, if you pay for something you expect it to work. The odd day of it being down for maintenance is expected. But this has been weeks of a site getting worse gradually. They must have plenty of money to keep it running, especially after putting the prices up not long ago.

And there's your problem. Why pay for it?

If you're in the market for training analysis you might as well pay for a decent one, look at Training Peaks, Today's Plan or WKO4.

One interesting feature of Strava premium (I don't pay, so I don't have it) is being able to look at someone's ride and download the GPX track file... very handy, especially for longer rides or tours

there's more to life than just training, you know?

Yesterday my ride uploaded but then I couldn't view it for a couple of hours. So I went and had some lunch.

So long as the data hasn't been deleted somehow (and mine was recorded on my Garmin anyway, so I still had it), not being able to look at it for a few hours isn't really the end of the world. I haven't really noticed it getting less reliable myself, I remember it always used to have issues on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when the weather was good and everyone was uploading at once, that seems to have got less frequent. Connect is worse :)

Although I do expect better from a paid for service, to be fair.

    <snip>I'm paying for this
Thanks for paying so I can still use the free service ....

Noticed it's been a bit laggy recently - it's difficult to complain when basically it's a free service - didn't worry too much on Sunday because I had other things to do and I knew the ride was saved on my Garmin computer...
I'll carry on using it whilst it's convenient - as soon as it stops I'll switch to a different method/service - preferably at no cost...
  • Sundays do seem the worst for Strava either running slow or not at all. It's the most common day for people to go out riding so perhaps the servers cannot cope with the volume of activity?
The good weather yesterday probably didn't help as loads of riders were out!

The issues yesterday seemed a lot worse for Garmin users than Elemnt ones, I use a Bolt and my ride uploaded fairly quickly, the main issue was the slow speed of Strava.

I don't pay for Strava so I can't get too worked up about it.
