Kinesis 4S Disk - what groupset?

edited February 2019 in Road buying advice
I'm toying with buying / building a Kinesis 4S disk frame set up for commuting with a rack.
all my bikes are currently Shimano 10/11sp so I'm not too familiar with SRAM's offerings -
but I'm wondering if a 1x11 / 1x12 setup would work for what I want?
I want hydraulic disks , so I'm thinking either new Shimano 105 hydraulic groupset would be adequate - but what are reasonable SRAM 1x groupsets to consider? (I appreciate there are free hub issues if I go 1x12)
thanks for opinions in advance

I have SRAM Force hydro 1x on my winter bike. I'm still not convinced by 1x on the road but the performance of the groupset is exemplary. I'd highly recommend Force.

    thanks - 1x11 sram hydraulic force g/s seems really dear at £1,179 tho! :ohttps://www.merlincycles.com/sram-force ... 83682.html vs 105 hydraulic 7020 g/s at around £680 https://www.vanillabikes.com/products/s ... gJoVPD_BwE
    am I missing something?

Only you can decide what groupset you want. Do you prefer the shift mechanism to be separate from the brake lever? Then SRAM. If you don't mind using the brake lever as part of the shifting, then Shimano for the cheaper costs. Bear in mind that 105 is on a similar level to SRAM Rival and below SRAM Force. Force is between Ultegra and Dura Ace. SRAM shifting is intuitive; short throw of the lever (1 short click) to change up & a long throw (2 clicks) to change down. Shimano is smoother in operation on the front, but if you're going 1x, that doesn't matter.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

Shimano is a huge mass production so is cheaper after the initial release has died down.

In the heirarchy of SRAM group sets,Force is the one below Red, so on a par with Ultegra. SRAM's equivalent to 105 is Rival. This probably explains why the Force set is more expensive than the 105.

For a commute bike I wouldn't go above 105/Rival. They are both great groupsets, yet reasonable to replace when/as bits get ground down by filth and salt.

I was giving feedback on SRAM 1x rather than recommending Force per se, but it is nice! I got mine fitted to a carbon Ridley gravel bike for £1700 reduced from £4k, so something of a bargain!

  • TBH the only viable way to get SRAM affordably is to cobble together a groupset with Ebay purchases.
Merlin are selling a Tiagra hyrdro groupset for quite cheap:

    https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/shimano- ... -groupset/

Although I'd probably spend the extra £150.00 on the 105 one.

My feeling a "105" level groupset would be adequate for the purposes - I just have no experience in the SRAM market and don't even know if there is a Rival Hydraulic 1x Group-set to consider as an option. I expected a 1x GS to perhaps be cheaper than a 2x11 groupset as there is only 1 shifter, no front mech and simpler chainset and if there was a price comparable 1x hydraulic brake groupset in the marketplace I would have thought about it
my first view was SRAM was way too expensive to consider.

I've got a Boardman CX Team with Rival 1 x hydraulic group set. Not sure how easy the group set is to buy (I believe there is an Apex 1 X as well). I was lucky enough to get the whole bike for £720 with offers and discounts.

might be cheaper looking for complete bike
I want rack mounts as my cervelo C3 can't take a rack

I've got SRAM Rival 1 on my cross bike and it is great. The one by mech is really good, but I feel the advantages are far more significant offroad with mud clearance and chains staying on, etc...

Given that a SRAM 1x system will be quite a lot more expensive than a 'bog standard' Shimano system, i'd go with the Shimano.

If you're considering a complete bike purchase then the PX London Road SL Rival 1 could be an option. Gives you the 1 x hydraulic groupset plus the rack/pannier/mudguard mounts you require

These days there are always some nearly new Boardman CX team bikes for sale on eBay.The red and black ones with full sram rival 1x systems on. Get one of those, they come with rack and mudguard mounts and a 10-42 XD cassette,. Either use it as is or strip it down. The bike actually gets excellent reviews. 1x is fine for everything. Don’t get hung about gaps in cassette etc it’s all in the mind! If you want a better climbing gear pop a 40 tooth front ring on.
