SRAM Rival 1X - Chainring Swap and New Chain Query
Hi All,
I want to change my front chainring and put a new chain on my CANYON Inflite AL SLX 8.0 Pro Race. I'll leave the rear cassette as is for now. Question is, what is a good replacement ring and chain or should I just stick with the SRAM stuff?
I have been advised (on this forum) a Superstar Raptor narrow-wide chainring is good. Cost is around half the price as a SRAM item. Don't know about the chain cost or what type to get if not SRAM.
Current gearing is 11-36 and 40. I thought I'd get a 42T ring.

FWIW, I’ve used a direct mount Superstar Raptor chainring on one Sram setup and it’s been fine. I’ve used a standard 5 arm mount Raptor on another bike with Sram and that’s been fine too!
Former is 11/36, latter 11/32 and both on 38 rings.0 -

Got one of these Raleigh Sport ones when I wanted to try a 38. No problems at all.
Also got a Hope 40t one.Works.just fine.

Did you find swapping out a chainring with +2 teeth worth it or was the +4 teeth option better? At the moment I dont need to use the biggest rear gear so in a perfect world I'd put on a new front ring which brings the largest rear gear to the same ratio as the current second largest rear gear. I'm looking through some calculators at the moment to see what I need to do:
http://www.bikecalc.com/gear_ratios

They seem t suggest I need a 46 on the front to get the same 1.11 ratio for the current 40x36 to a proposed 46x42 (@1.10).

It depends on where you are cycling I think. Lot of hills around Huddersfield and I like to spin up hills with my 65 yr old legs and I’m not bothered about pedalling down hill.I actually went from a 44 front to a 38 on my CX Team so obviously you can tell the difference. The 40 is on my Trek and suites me fine just one less spare gear to fall back on but still let’s me spin. It’s always nice to know you have one left just in case!0
