I would use my todger as a measure of temperature, personally.

    A nibble is generally ok.

I think I would just stick with the bib shorts with the Bikesters over the top. I actually only have two pairs of bib shorts atm, so I guess I will sooner or later get around to purchasing some more. It is a bit of pain that they're quite expensive, but you can only wear then the once before they need washing.
  • Buy some tights without pad and then you can put your shorts on underneath and recycle the tights.

In my early thirties I thought anything below 4degrees meant longs however I hope I’m wiser now and considerably more informed.

A farmer friend told me once cold gets into your bones it means problems for your body in later life. I appreciate that’s not a scientific method of evaluation but a view that was gleaned through several generations of farming but it was a view I subscribe to.

So rather than establishing the lowest temperature you can get way with, elevate your vision to one which provides your body the longevity to indulge in a long life not constrained because your body is knackered

What's the difference between that, and what I'd said I do in my previous post? Except what I said in my previous post doesn't involve spending any more money.

I brought some DHB deep winter bibs around a year ago - they are great for getting you out of the door on a cold morning. But they quickly become heavy and just too warm. I find funkier bib shorts better for winter riding - don't cost the earth either...

As in standard summer ones? Funny thing is both of the pairs of bib shorts that I own are from Funkier. I bought them at the beginning of last year, when they were reduced.
  • I got a pair of fleecy shorts (be hot ones from Santini) as I hate full tights but want to remain intact in nether regions. I find that a good compromise!

  • I've worn my bib shorts with leg warmers down to 31f, or just under 0c, without issue.

    Because my todger is invincible.

When I was younger (and broke) and commuted to work in colder-than-freezing temps, I occasionally fold a sock in half and stuck it in the front of my shorts. Blocked the wind enough to do the job. But in all seriousness, that was back in the day. Now that the chamois extends further up the front of the shorts, it's not really an issue for me unless temps get into the 20s.
