New noises

I was cycling in Mallorca a couple of weeks ago during the thunderstorms.
The first day was torrential rain and we ended up cycling through deep streams crossing the roads accompanied by a faint smell of sewage. Thankfully that was the only time we got soaked.
The next day there was a creaking / cracking sound coming from the rear hub and a dreadful squeal from the rear brake.
We eventually figured out that the creaking / cracking sound was caused by sand particles trapped between the cassette and the freehub. It only happened in the biggest 3 sprockets and, on my SRAM cassette, these are a single block. The sound reduced over the week as the sand was crushed.
To try and stop the squeal I cleaned the wheel, sanded the braked blocks and toed them in.
It still squealed until we cycled through a shower and the usual grey grinding paste sorted the problem
