Broken Wahoo ELEMNT Mini

Bought a second hand Mini (despite all the less than pleased reviews) - but it was cheap and suits my needs.
I went through the setup procedure and during this was alerted that the unit needed a firmware upgrade.
The unit then displayed 'Updating' but during this something went wrong. Probably my fault...
Ever since it has been stuck on this screen - I even resorted to taking out the battery to see if it would reset itself.
I fear I've managed to break it before the first ride!
In the meantime I set up the speed sensor, including a new battery, with the fitness app - but sometimes this doesn't seem to want to wake from sleep (no lights) and therefore is totally unreliable. I've tried the Wahoo Utility app as well and sometimes it connects and others not. I'm using an iPhone 7.
