Stuck bottom bracket time - Hollowtech with a plastic removal tool
Is there a better tool for the job?
I've got the right spanner, but Hollowtech seems to have come in different diameters and Shimano sell this plastic adaptor ring to fit it the spanner to the smaller diameter Ultegra one I've got.
I can't get much torque on it before the plastic splines start to strip
Is this sort of thing going to fit https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Ice-Toolz-Hollowtech-2-BB-Tool_37724.htm or will it be for the larger diameter bearings?

Presumably we're talking about removing an old stuck bottom bracket, right?
You could try clamping the bottom bracket in a bench vice, then unscrewing the frame from the bottom bracket.
I'd imagine someone has made an alternative tool by now though. I've only managed to damage one of mine when it wasn't fully inserted onto the old bottom bracket - and I've definitely had to give one the full rubber mallet treatment to get it to turn - are you sure you're turning the right way to unscrew it?0 -
Looks like this is one - https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-m ... 60-shimano0

And the official shimano one - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... prod1374410

Thanks both of you. Yes the spanner is what I already have, and the reviews of the Shimano adaptor are from people who couldn't get the adaptor ring to work. Still, £20... cheaper than a new bike though.0

Wow i have one of the plastic adapters which i use in a metal park tools cast jobby. Ive even used it with a 24inch breaker bar and never stripped or damaged the plastic. that BB must be seriously stuck. are you sure you're turning the right way?0 -

I find the plastic adapters to be fairly robust when used with the deep socket type BB tool, but utterly rubbish with the open spanner things.
Just buy the right sized socket type tool; the older, bigger type BB cups will become progressively rarer as time goes on.0
