Is there a tool that fits the new, smaller, Shimano 105 / Ultegra bottom brackets, or do I have to make do with the crappy plastic adapter? My DS cup is pretty tight and the plastic is just getting worn and is slipping off the grooves.

If there is a proper tool then that's what I want.
    What's the external diameter?

If it's the one I think it is, a Park Tool BBT-29 will do the job, you're welcome to borrow mine.

hmm - I wonder if a triple could work ... is the shifting between middle and top the same as a double?
I believe so, but haven't tried it myself. You just use the middle and top positions so if you accidentally shift into the unused granny ring position there is just a bit of loose cable. If you were to use bottom and middle trying to shift into top would stress everything unnecessarily.
I only read that on here once so usual caveats of advice is worth what you paid for it apply.

If I admit to having a 2300 shifter on the left and 5600 on the right - tells you where I am in terms of bodging ;) I'm happy to compromise on this bike ... alternative could be to buy the wife some 6700's and take her 5700's ;)

It is just collecting dust in my loft so if you cover postage feel free to give it a go!
excellent - thanks :) yes please ... I've got no other jobs to do on the bike ... :o

    PM on it's way.

If you're not sorted I’ve got a 5600 double lever gathering dust somewhere, let me know if you want it.

Cheers but I've got one of those already for the screw push fit in the Cervelo, and this is even smaller than that.

There's a bitzman adaptor made of metal thats pretty good, I've got one.
Assuming this is the 6800 BBs ?

Aye, that's the one. The 5800 and 6800 bbs are the same; BB-R60. Does it have a name or id?

Iv'e got the Shimano tool TLFC37 for the job, both bikes have BB-R60s in them and they are cheap enough and easy enough to replace then the time comes.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

That's the the one I've got. I, unfortunately, snapped one when I used it with a friends C shaped hollowtech spanner at a friends, as it slipped off as I was trying to loosen it, meaning that it got "squashed" into an egg shape, and when trying to re-circularlise it, it snapped.

Friend bought another though to replace it, as I use both BBR60, M8000 and normal Hollowtech BBs, and at home use a full circle wrench adaptor, so I don't have that problem.

  • It's been well over a year that I have no appetite for any bike related purchase... big rides yes, I cycle more rather than less, but equipment not really... I've even lost my Wiggle platinum discount, what's wrong with me?

    what's wrong with me?
    Where to begin?
In this particular case maybe moving away from London helps. Is there less of an arms race in the Midlands?

Don't get me wrong, it is liberating not to give a monkey if the saddle squeaks or the ferrules are not matching and the bar tape is the wrong colour... I just wonder how that happened. I used to obsess about those things and I used to desire new kit.
I've even gone back from trendy tubeless to cheap clinchers

I'm sure it is. I was half serious in my response. If the people around you are obsessing about the latest fanciest stuff it must rub off a little, even if you try to resist. Secondly you may just be happier and more comfortable with your lot so not worrying about these things so much. Plus of course if what you've got works why change it. I think I went for just over a year without buying anything other than service items, that went out the window about April time with two new frames turning up.
Couldn't live with a squeaky saddle though, I can't stand noises that shouldn't be there.

I no longer get all excited for kit. I fixed up my soot bike but still prefer the steel fratello. I try to ride when I can. The only real recent purchase was some new clothes as I finally admitted I won't get into the old stuff any more without looking totally awful, rather than the awful in stuff that fits. ;)
    RIP commute...

This is how much I don't give a monkeys, on my commuter I have used green and yellow striped electrical tape to secure the ends of my bar tape. It's hideous, but it does the job.

I love the bike and in some ways prefer riding it to my carbon "racer", but i don't want it to look too beautiful/too attractive to a would be thief. Take a close look though and the welding on those italian columbus steel tubes is immaculate.

My last "big" purchase was 2011. Everything now is just as-and-when required replacements.
Although the replacements are usually upgrades, if possible.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.
