Bottom bracket and crank compatability

As the title suggests, I'm after info about BB / crankset compatability.
I'm building a new bike in the winter, and I'm getting a list of components together.
The frameset I like has a 386 EVO bottom bracket, 86.5mm shell. It states it has clearance for 53/39 chainset, so I'm not worried about the frame fouling the chainrings.
What I don't seem to understand is - can I fit a regular Ultegra dual chainring crankset? I'm certain I'll need an adaptor of some description, but which BB I have no idea. Or the width. Is the axle long enough? If not, can I fit an XTR MTB crankset in place of the Ultegra crank, and will it work with the rest of the 11sp groupset? Can you even get chainrings that large for XTR cranks?
Thanks all for any enlightenment you can provide!
