Afternoon all,

Am after a new pair of bib shorts for my 20mile round trip commute (bout 3 times per week) and other sub 50 activities. I have a decent pair of lussos for best/longer trips, but don't want to wear these out.

Am currently looking at the Lusso Aero 50's (my last pair wore out) - Are there any other options?

So:
Under £50
Hardwearing
Will take multiple washes
Mostly black

Almost in your price bracket - look out for sales. Great hard wearing shorts -

  • Merlin Elite are good.
  • I've been agonisingly putting a PX order together this afternoon, putting a load of "maybe" items in the basket after scouring the site and then having my eyes pop out of my head when I saw the basket price (before then removing less essential items)!

In among the items I removed were a pair of SuperRoubaix bib tights, they have various brandings of what looks the same model (albeit one or two have a larger suggested temp range) for £40... Decided that as they were currently non-essential, I would try to remember to keep an eye on their price, in case it dropped.

+1 for these, especially at that price.

For me, either the Endura FS260, or this little hidden gem, the pad is stunning:

One point of note, they aren't kidding when they state it's an italian fit. At 63kg I can fit into xs rapha lightweight, and fs260 shorts, in these I needed medium, but as long as you bear that in mind, you'll end up with a stonking quality pair of shorts.

Errrr, the cheapest Lusso bibs are the Aero 50's at £59.50 so not sure where you get £30 from? I have the carbons which are great but £80 which is out of his budget, hence why I recommended the Merlin ones.

I do like them and would be quite happy to buy another pair - Just interested to see if there's anything better in that price bracket

Funkier - not only workhorse short, but good enough for anything TBH.

I'm happy enough in planetx for commuting (14 miles each way everyday).
More often than not they are £21 in some sale or other.

My vote for cheap but long lasting commuting/workhorse shorts are the basic DHBs.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-bib-shorts-1/

£30 RRP, less if you have Gold / Platinum discount; if you have neither you can create a new account and use the £10 off £50 for new customers and you can get two for £50 (just use a different e-mail address).

Mine have survived 2 years of commuting so far and still going strong, generally using 2-3 times a week through the summer washing each time, even tumbling. I retired my last set of DHBs after over 5 years. Easy good enough for 20 mile commutes, I've ridden up to 70 miles in mine with no discomfort. There are more spendy DHBs still within budget, but these are excellent workhorses.

I've used many of the other recommendations here and my take is:
Btwins - Good value, decent pad, but not as "all black" and didn't survive as long (lycra goes see through & pad flattens)
Planet X - Sizing and fit was weird so sent straight back. Don't buy them for £25 as the others are worth the extra, particularly with £4 postage. There is a set currently for £15 which might be worth getting two for £34 though.
I haven't used Lusso yet which I think I need to address.

I have an old pair of 'Tracer' DHB that have lasted for 4-5 years and have been brilliant. I think they were £40 and are still some of the fast pairs I grab.

However, a lot of the DHB shorts I've had recently have gone downhill IMO. Even the more expensive versions are relegated behind the older pair in terms of the 'pecking order'.

    Cheers All,

Have taken a punt on on the the decathlon bibs at £14 delivered. Gonna see what they are like, then either buy a second pair or pick up a pair of Lusso Aero 50's
