Mombuey > Ribeira Sacra. Luintra 05/09/2018 - Stage 11 - 207,8 km

This stage is the longest in this edition of the Vuelta.
The 11th stage of the Vuelta a España travels from Zamora to Luintra, where Simon Yates soloed to victory in 2016. The hilly route amounts to 207.8 kilometres.

It’s been two years since the Vuelta last visited Luintra. That finale was marked by the Pombar-climb, a 2 kilometres ascent at 7.5% with steepest ramps of 9%. Simon Yates attacked in the main group, gobbled up early attacker Mathias Frank, and soloed to victory. Over the Pombar-climb there were 3.6 kilometres remaining – firstly a flat and with 2 kilometres to go a downhill section, that ran to a 500 metres false flat run-in to the line.

The finale of 2018’s 11th stage is exactly the same.

But before that the riders face a long, hard and hilly day in the saddle. The Puerto de Padornelo is the first climb (6.5 kilometres at 3.7%),

and on it goes via the Alto de Covelo (9.3 kilometres at 3.6%),

Alto de Trives (11 kilometres at 4%),

Alto del Mirador de Cabezoas (15.5 kilometres at 3.2%),

and a host of non-classified hills in between those KOMs.

The Mirador the Cabezoas is crested with 17.8 kilometres remaining before the riders fly on descent to the above-mentioned finale.

The backdrop in the last kilometres is breathtaking. The narrow road meanders next to the River Sil. The area is known as Ribeira Sacra, famous for its wines.

Mombuey
Unprecedented departure

444 inhabitants

Zamora Province
The locality of Mombuey is located on the extreme North of the Province of Zamora, within the Region of Carballeda. Its Alfoz includes Fresno de la Carballeda and Valparaíso. Mombuey is a place of transit for those who, from the Castilian Plateau, head to Galician territory.

This locality is very interesting, not just for its natural heritage but also for its cultural heritage, which dates back to Medieval times. Its Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was declared a Historical Artistic Monument in 1931. It is the splendid tower that stands over the Western gable end.

Ribeira Sacra. Luintra

Ourense Province
If there is a place to see, to feel the passing of time, to listen to the silence, to smell the purest nature and to savour life, that place is the Ribeira Sacra. Between the Sil and Miño river canyons is Luintra, one of the most beautiful landscape discoveries in La Vuelta's recent history. Following Simon Yates's victory in 2016, the Orense locality will, once again, be a privileged and decisive setting for one of this edition's stages.
Where does the magnetism of Nogueira de Ramuín and the Ribeira Sacra reside that makes travellers who have discovered them return? In the Romanesque, with numerous churches, such as the one in Nogueira, and chapels that invite spiritual peace and allow you to contemplate unique examples of one of the most unique architectural styles? In the landscape, dominated by the Sil Canyon and its tributaries, from viewpoints such as Vilouxe, making up endless postcard images that travellers are not likely to forget? In its charming towns, a faithful reflection of its honest and hard-working residents, that mark this part of the Galician geography? In its original gastronomy, accompanied by exquisite Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin wines? In the State-owned hotel of Santo Estevo, the hotels and numerous country lodges that make travellers enjoy a pleasant rest? We encourage cycling fans and tourists, in general, to get to know Luintra, if they don’t already, and discover the many attractions that can be found in the municipality of Nogueira de Ramuín and in the unique region that is the Ribeira Sacra.

Hoping Valverde has his eye on red and a stage win but otherwise don't see who is going to do the work to keep a break under control.
  • Sounds like Lopez is in trouble
  • Lopez has now got the gap back down to under a minute. I'm guessing it was some sort of mechanical/crash and he just had trouble getting back on because the pace up front is high whilst we wait for an acceptable breakaway to form.

Mollema, Rolland and Majka all in the latest one so not sure if this one will be allowed to go either.
  • Lopez eventually got back.

Franco Pellizotti (Bahrain-Merida), Nans Peters (AG2R-La Mondiale), Omar Fraile (Astana), Alessandro De Marchi, Nicolas Roche, Dylan Teuns (BMC Racing Team), Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe), Thibaut Pinot, Léo Vincent (Groupama-FDJ), Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal), Jack Haig (Mitchelton-Scott), Winner Anacona (Movistar), Ryan Gibbons (Dimension Data), Pierre Rolland (Education First-Drapac), Jhonatan Restrepo (Katusha Alpecin), Sergio Henao (Team Sky), Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), Sergio Pardilla (Caja Rural-Seguros-RGA) and Mikel Bizkarra (Euskadi-Murias) have just over a minute from the peloton.

An insane pace so far and there is stormy weather approaching the race.

  • Gap has gone out to over 4 minutes and the race is still well ahead of schedule.

    Pinot virtual red?
  • They had 100kms of what seemed like constant attacks trying to get the break away so I'm not surprised it is fast. I am a little surprised though that they let a break with a potential GC rider like Pinot, who's only 2 and a half minutes down, go.

He's got a minute and a half virtual lead in the red.
  • Pinot still has 3 minutes, with 32kms left so he could well climb right back into contention.

You invested in it, so you need to roll with his punches and dig in for glory.

  • In the end, Pinot only gained a few seconds, as the GC boys came out to play.

De Marchi always going to be too strong for Restrepo. He chalks up another GC stage win from the break.

  • Quintana trying to attack on the flat in the final km. Must be feeling good.

Sounds like Movistar weren't happy with the lack of work from Mitchelton-Scott in trying to chase down Pinot, but Simon Yates responded by saying they took a risk but also can't chase down everything.
