Trigger shifter, rapid fire shifter or grip shifter

My 4 year old has her first bike with gears, but is struggling with the shifter. Changing up with the Shimano trigger shifter is ok, but the thumb lever for changing down has too much travel on it for her small hands. I'm lead to understand that grip shifters are too stiff for little children so has anyone a recommendation for a light effort with minimal travel 8 speed shifter?
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
