Don't know if anybody fancies watching. Should be available outside the principality.

There are a few people about in Cardiff, today!
Becky and Rachel have already had a mention....

It's a bit cringy and overtly nationalistic for my taste.

It would be quite amusing if, having survived the Tour, he now had a minor tumble riding through Cardiff with a bunch of kids. Nice to see my old club represented in the 'peloton'.

They'll probably have to put up with being blasted for getting in the way by the tens of thousands of "cycling fans" trying to get home

Sounds like this chain gang weren't up to much. Good drafting potential though.

Glad to such good crowds though, I won't be missed
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Two terrible renditions of the national anthem later, and I'm afraid I now agree with you.

Things like this just bring out professional Welsh people to wave their flags and show they're Welsh (Max Boyce has even jumped on the bandwagon). I suspect a large part of the crowd had never watched a bike race or heard of Geraint until a few weeks ago but HAD to be there.

That said, I think I'm being overly harsh and it's nice to see cycling / a cyclist getting such attention and there were undoubtably a lot of local cyclists there to see him. I just always feel a bit uncomfortable with flag waving events.
  • Nice bit of cross-banter there from George and Geraint.
Gutted he won't be available for the big event, next June.
    Flipping Dauphine.

Without wanting to be sarky, was there much traction in Wales during the Tour?

Cymru didnt seem very Byth until the last weekend is all...

I was in town to watch Mission Impossible, so I popped along and took a few photos (the sound system could have been better). A lot of people there.

I’m not Welsh but if someone said 10 years ago that by 2020 they’d have a Welsh Tour winner I’d have laughed them away.

    It is quite remarkable.

Hmmm, I'd have laughed and then said, "It'll be Gerraint Thomas..."

(and then I'd have said, "if everyone else falls off, he should totally focus on the classics, he could win the Ronde you know".)

If someone had told me that 2 months ago I'd have laughed them away!

entirely true I'd say. we've 3 members of our cycling club that are very welsh, and you can guess their reaction. frankly its great to see a decent guy win it and I couldn't care whether he was Welsh or not.

nowt wrong with being a little bit proud of a local person who has won the hardest race you can do on a bike. apologies if my ramblings appear welshist.

I said years ago very much jokingly that If a Brit wins the tour I’d be there in Paris to see it... I then said even more jokingly if a Welshman wins I’d be there, I was half expecting someone’s son or grandson of the current generation to do it and I’d be there as an old oap. Well I’ve made both trips and it shows that dreams can come true.

I didn’t go down yesterday, the true fans were in Paris;) and like above I don’t particularly do flag waving in crowds but it was so nice to see yesterday the general public of Wales celebrate a true Welsh national hero.

    Nice.

It didn't go there this year

I suspect your sentiment may be that the majority of brits in Paris were middle class johnny come lately cycling fans.

The real fans were on the tourmalet near the disgusting la mongie, or the col du portet in the searing heat and no shade for 5 hours, or the finish in Pau after riding over the solour and aubisque.

    ridiculous statement.

I just got a ticket for a Q&A with Roger Daltrey at the Cheltenham Lit Fest, despite 50(?) years of pretty high profile music career, millions of record sales and a pretty loyal fanbase, its a fairly intimate venue, copy of his new book, signing and it cost £35.

It seems a right gamble that the thousands who will stand on the street in the middle of summer will fork out that kind of money. I know you have to make hay when the sun shines, but it was only a couple of years ago he was doing free book signings in Waterstones. Its certainly new territory for UK cycling stars ...
