Hi, a friend has offered me a cheap but top quality XX1. I wondered if it would work on my road bike, which also has a BB30 BB. I notice the max chainring size is around 54T but thats fine. Are they all 1x cranksets? thanks

All XX1 Eagle are 1x, yes.

I'm not sure about BB30, but often road setups are narrower than MTB (For example the Shimano HT2 road is 7.5mm narrower than the MTB) and that would cause you an issue.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

If it is like the 11 speed versions, then yes and no. It would have a removable spider which is held on by 3 m5 bolts allowing either a direct mount chairing to be fitted else a single or even double chainrings, the bcd will vary according to which spider efitted.

You will need to take care to get the correct chainline.
