Just bought a new looking second hand Carerra Fury - great bike btw - only issue is when braking there is a little play in the front of the bike where the handlebar stem/front fork connects to the rest of the body of the bike - where its labelled cartridge (sorry i am not a very knowledgeable bike person so please forgive the vague description)

i have tried tightening the nut on the top of the handlebar stem but this does not work.

Essentially when you front brake the is a little forward movement - thought this should be tight

thanks for any advice

  • try undoing the stem bolts and then tighten the top cap bolt up , then tighten them back up . this should solve your problem . namaste , Russ
  • You need to loosen the bolts attaching the handlebar stem to the forks before tightening the top bolt.

Once the bolts are loosened tighten the top bolt until there's no play then retighten the stem bolts, making sure the bars are aligned with the front wheel.

Before you tighten the bolt on the top of the steering tube, you need to slacken the two small bolts on the stem (the bit that connects the handlebars to the steering tube). Then tighten the top bolt (just enough to get rid of the looseness), then retighten the stem bolts (making sure the handlebars are pointing straight ahead and don’t overtighten these, the torque value should be written on the stem, usually around 5Nm).

If that doesn’t fix it the headset bearings could be worn. Or it could be the front brake is loose.
