Ultegra R8000 Chain issue

Not easy to explain this one, but when pushing on in the small ring, and in the higher gears on the rear cassette, if I stop pushing the pedals, effectively the chain goes all slack on the top side of the drivetrain- it's as if the cassette still is being pushed around and pulls the chain through the pulley wheels, and slackens the chain between the cassette and the chain rings. Then the spring on the derailleur pulls the whole lot back into tension.

Any ideas gratefully received?

That’s what happens when the free hub sticks. Remove, clean out the gunk and put back together.
  • There's just over 1000 miles on it. And all in great weather....

    Just watched this....https://youtu.be/IMlARo8AiFM

But I'd be surprised if I needed to replace the bearings in the body, with so little miles.

    Could it be dragging pawls?

Yes could be dragging you described the symptom
  • Definitely sounds like a sticking free hub. Worthwhile stripping it to have a look. Just because it's new doesn't mean there can't be a problem manifest somewhere.
