1 x 11 gear ratios?

Got my Boardman CX Team. Comes with 44T chain ring and 10-42 cassette.

44 x 10 seems like a massive gear ro me for hack/gravel/CX bike, especially for CX racing, waste of a couple of gears, so thinking it should be changed.

I’m likely to have a second pair of wheels shortly and won’t be limited to X Drive SRAM cassettes.

So, I’m thinking 42 ring and 11-36 cassette. Or even 40 and 11-36 (or 11-32)

What does everyone else do?

34 x 11-28 works for most courses round here..

38 11-32 works great for me. Depends how low a gear you think you'll need.

Just bought a 2nd hand cross bike - I mostly ride MTB so very much new to this. I like my hill climbing so finding the 11-36 / 40T set-up tough going - my MTB is 10-50 / 32T lol.

So basically, what's the cheapest way to get me some decent hills? Change the ring down? How low can I reasonably go? It's running a SRAM S350-1 - what kind of chain rings are compatible?

SOrry for the daft questions but never had to adjust ratios before....

Check the BCD of the crank, if its a standard compact 110BCD then you can go as low as 34 tooth if you'd like. My girlfriend runs 34 front with 34 rear, she isn't very fit yet and gets on fine with this. Any lower than a 1:1 ratio and you may as well get off and walk. Any standard narrow wide chainring will be fine, I bought a direct from China one for £7 off Ebay recently and it does the job.
  • Thanks for that - seems a bit of a minefield online lol.
    - Some are labelled as 'road' - they will be fine on a CX I assume?
    - does it need to say 11x or just narrow wide?
    - and some say 2 X 11x chain ring. Would that work with a 1 X 11 set-up?

  • That's an inner chain ring for a 22 gear double crankset. If you are buying sram you want the 1x X-SYNC chainring. You can tell because the teeth are longer and have a flat edge, they are not the shark tooth profile of a standard chainring.

Road just refers to the BCD being that of a road crank rather than MTB.
Something like this would do the job

    Should work fine.
  • Currently using 36 single chainring with 11-28 cassette although a 32 would prob be better, I had a 28 I could use! Keen to get an ultegra clutch mech though.
