I am preparing my winter bike with new tyres 700*28. I am between Schwalbe Marathon (not Plus) and Durano plus. the weight is very similar about 550g each. I am going to use them for long commuting 15 miles each way or winter training about 40 miles rides. It is basically a choice between a heavy racing or a mid-weight touring tyre. Any experience or recommendations?

Neither. Michelin Pro 4 Endurances, they weigh about half the weight and roll far better. Also the puncture resistance is just as good as the Durano Plus's. I used them myself last winter and didn't get a single puncture, they're available in 28mm:

Don't buy Durano Plus, they are a hose pipe and you might as well get Gatorskins. Normal Durano is pretty good if you don't ride through thorns, flints and glass constantly, or other suggestions as Joe mentioned

I like both. I've worn a couple of pairs of Durano + to the puncture protection strip.
Neither are race tyres but both are durable.
  • I like conti gp 4 seasons better than marathons. Lighter, easier to install, and still flat free for me.

I'd suggest these instead of marathons, they are very similar and a lot cheaper - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-essent ... road-tyre/

If you ride solo, that's what I'd go for. If your training rides are with others, the Durano is a better bet unless you want to work really hard!

Does the Durano plus now come in 28mm then? When I was looking a couple of years back it didn't...

Durano are garbage, Michelin Pro 4 Endurance or my new favourite Pirelli P-Zero Velo 4S.

in the past i used many different race/training tyres and did not like the flat tyres, then ended with Marathon Plus 700*25 for a while. Then looking for something lighter I moved to Durano plus. Now I wanted to try something faster again. It looks that Michelin Pro 4 Endurance gives the best rolling and then Conti GP 4 seasons is a bit slower but more puncture resistant.
My concern is, are Michelin Pro 4 Endurance and Conti GP 4 seasons really puncture resistant and also do they last as long as the Durano plus and the Marathon?

PS: on my faster and lighter bike I will go for Michelin Pro 4 Endurance 700*25...

Not the most common tyre but I have been on these (on 3 different bikes) in various sizes without any punctures and with fabulous grip. My new favourite.......
