My son bought this bike on line from a well known dealer and terrestrial shop, last week the rear brake failed (lost all hydraulic pressure) He contacted them and initially they said take it to a local dealer and get a report on the problem and they would sort it out. This has happened but now the bike seller is now saying that because the bike wasn’t returned for its 6 week checkup it isn’t their problem and they are washing their hands of it. The bike was bought in May this year and hasn’t been crashed or abused. This seems outrageous to me, suggestions on what to do next?

TIA

  • I just remembered, he bought the bike on a cycle to work scheme so technically they are the owners of the bike. I’ve suggested he contact them ( It’s a Police Federation scheme) and let them try to sort it out? Shame the retailer had this approach, I certainly won’t be buying from them again.
  • What would a bike shop do with a hydraulic set-up anyway at a 6 week service? Not like they'd bleed a hydraulic system and replace with new fluid or anything unless it went in with the fault.

Name n' shame the bike shop I say...
  • Exactly, I’ve read up about it and unless the shop can prove the fault was caused by the buyer the presumption is it was inherent. I’m really angry about this as I recommended the shop to my son, it’s Rutland Cycles btw.

I also bough one from there on C2W scheme...

    +1

Maybe approach Rutland again as it could be you just ended up being dealt with by a dickhead and someone else there might help, maybe the person was having a bad day. If you get what you want then great, if you don't then start getting louder about it in store right in front of customers looking to buy telling them not to and do this for ages. Make sure you cost them more money than it will cost you.

What you've asked them to look at is not unreasonable and if they want to sell bikes that have faults or bad setups then not address them cos of a 6 week glance at a bike then f*** them.

My Cube came from Rutland and I can't say I ever clearly saw a note saying I must send it back for a 6-week checkup! However, fortunately for me, mine has been fine for the last ~14.5 months.

  • Well Rutland came through eventually, he got reimbursed more than the cost of the repair. That seems fair for the shit they put him through.
