Rear horizontal dropout spacers

Can I remove the rear dropout spacers from my old steel frame with horizontal dropouts?
They look like this but cheaper:

I need to pull the wheel axle to the back end of the rear dropouts to gain some space for bigger volume tyres.
Do we really need these spacers?
