I live in the states but will be spending approx. two weeks in Co. Durham in September and would like to hire a road bike. Does anyone know of a good place to hire a bike? I'm staying in Barnard Castle but can travel a bit to pick it up.
Thanks in advance

You may be struggling with this. I know of a couple of places in County Durham that hire out Ebikes but not road bikes. Possibly try contacting Wheelbase in Darlington or Infinity Cycles in Durham to see if they know of anywhere.
Could be somewhere down in Yorkshire but that's not really my area.
Other alternative is you go up to Hamsterley for the day and get a mountain bike instead.0 -
Maybe a terrible idea but I stumbled across this website for individuals to rent out stuff:

Looks a brilliant idea for things like bike boxes but not that many bikes and people do seem to want far too much for them! Starting to sound like a terrible idea......
In principle it's a great idea though for places without a bike hire culture. Maybe even stick a post on here offering to bribe the person with some booty from the US.0 -

Thanks! I'll reach out to them to see what they say. I thought about Hamsterley too. It's a nice place with decent trails.0 -

I saw that, but a 2011 speedster?? I could probably buy that bike for £100!0 -
As an alternative, what's the best place to look for used bikes around there? I would be ok with spending about £500 or less on a used bike. I ride a Canyon Endurace in XL here in the states but just don't want the hassle of boxing it up and dealing with it on our budget airline (WOW air).
Fortunately, I have a brother-in-law that would probably be willing to check it out/pick it up for me and my mother-in-law also has a garage to store it.0 -

Probably Gumtree. Prices always seem to be somewhat inflated on EBay. Or you could get a cheap new bike from Decathlon.0 -
If your on Facebook join a group called 'CDNE Bike Sales' (CDNE stands for Cycling Development Northeast) plenty of bargain bikes to be had at various budgets. Then once your done with it either sell it back on or there is an charity in Newcastle called ReCycke Y'Bike that you could donate it to http://recyke-y-bike.org/0

Completely forgot about this but if you can get to Newcastle to collect then Cycle Hub do bike hire https://www.thecyclehub.org/hire-3/0
