Cycling with one arm

Not for me but does anyone know of any resources on riding a bike when you are without the lower part of one arm.

I do some bikeability instruction in schools and the child in question is competent on a bike but is only able to use one brake, it makes signalling right difficult as she is then riding no hands etc. I wondered if there was something I could pass on to the parents via the school.

Get in touch with the paralympic people ?

There was one bloke round here who did fine with one arm. Always went too fast for me to see what his set up was.

There are a few things like this on the market that could halp with the turning signal problem (although I guess reliant on roadusers picking up on the fact that its signalled from the helmet)

Hi DV, Yes I'm a one armed cyclist etc (no left arm), admittedly I don't give turn signals but the link above looks a good option.

I run a single front chainring at the front on my mountain bike and commuter, my race bike is DI2 which can be programmed to shift both front and rear shifters using one hand at the click of a button. I have linked both brakes using a problem solver, and for long rides I use a time trial hydration system (large bottle with long drink tube) so I can hydrate without stopping.

I hope this helps, great to hear the children are giving cycling a go, any other questions please just ask.

I'm currently training for the "Ride London" at the end of the Month.

    Cheers

I would defo contact British Cycling, they had some paralympian guys running some Go-Ride courses so I'm sure they would advise.

There is a guy who works in the Giant store in Cambridge with one arm, he was very friendly and very forthcoming when I asked him about how he cycles - as above he sets up his Di2 with shifters on one side, but never asked him about braking & signalling.

Might seem a bit strange but if you call them up and ask to speak to the 'one-armed cyclist' but I'm confident he would be happy to give you any advice.
