What do I need to convert this headset to take an ahead stem?

I have a Record threaded headset and I am struggling with the quill stem.
See pic below:
I found a video of the same bike as mine on the web and it has a modern stem fitted to what I assume is a threaded fork like mine. I like the look of this as the bike has a modern stem but it doesn’t seem to have the headset top nut on show and I think it looks pretty cool - see photo below:
Until now all the conversions I have seen use a quill to ahead converter but look pretty rubbish with the top nut sitting under the stem - see below
So basically how do I convert my stem so it looks right as on the blue bike?

The most important thing you will need is a new fork with a longer steerer...0

You said (or implied) you didn't want to use a converter..0

maybe threadless fork has been used. the quill to a head adapter is the only way of doing what you want. of course what you want is sacrilege on a pretty bike. there are bars with modern compact geometry in 26.0mm form. Deda makes a nice quill stem called the murex with a removable face plate so it all goes together. Oh wait you have this already so why change.
The factory 5 quill has a removable face plate and 31.8mm clamp.
Leave the quill convertors for beater bikes. for period bikes stick to quills unless you are changing the fork and there is no modern fork that goes with ornate lugs unless you have it made.
the reason why the conversion you have seen to date looks gash is because the a-head stem just looks wrong. it not the fault of the converter. even that stem on the blue bike looks wrong to me.
Keep the quill.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -
I already have the Murex!
I might just try the 80 mm version of the Murex to see if that helps get a better fit - shame they don't do a 90mm!0 -
I just edited my post when i realised you did.
Nitto stems come in 90mm but dont have the removable face plate. you can also change the bars for a different reach which depending on where you spend your time can ammount to the same thing.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0
