Mixing Ultegra 8000 and Dura-Ace R9100

I need to replace damaged front and rear derailleurs on my Giant TCR Advanced Pro 1 following a crash. I've got full Ultegra R8000 with 36/52 crankset, 11-30 cassette and 22 speed shifters. I am considering replacing those components with Dura-Ace R9100 11-speed, with a view to upgrading the entire groupset over time as other components wear out. If I was to replace the derailleurs with DA, will I also have to replace the chainset with DA? Are they cross-compatible?

Also, the crash scuffed the corner of my right brake lever - is it possible to replace just the carbon lever part or do you have to replace the entire shifter unit? If the latter is true, is it worth upgrading the Ultegra R8000 shifters with Dura-Ace R9100?

Thanks

No need to change chain set. Anything will work.

I've decided to replace like for like. I need to order the parts so I can get my bike shop to repair my bike.

Can you advise what I need to get as there are different types of Ultegra R8000 front and rear mech.

Do I need a short cage or medium cage rear mech, and for the front mech do I need braze-on, 28.6mm/31.8mm or 34.9mm?

    It's an 11 speed semi-compact Giant TCR.

    Thank you!

looks like a braze on front mech from a quick google of the TCR with R8000 on it - just check to be sure: does it clamp around the seat tube or bolt onto a plate that protrudes from the seat tube (braze on).

R8000 rear mechs come in GS (Medium) and SS (Short) cage lengths.

    RD-SS covers: 11-25T to 11-30T
    RD-GS covers: 11-28T to 11-34T

If your lbs is fitting the parts, you would be better asking them what you need to do the job, then there shouldn't be any problems with wrong parts being ordered.

If the shifter blade is damaged I am nearly 100% its new shifter time.

They are 100% cross compatible with DA9100 but the gains are 'marginal' at best. Basically the function is identical but the DA will use lighter/more exotic materials and cost a lot more.

As Shimano evolves, especially in 11 speed, the equivalent ranges are harder and harder to differentiate, except for looks and weight. Maybe braking.

5800 vs 6800 vs 9000 are all excellent when setup well and blindfolded you may struggle to tell the differences. 5800 braking could be identified the weakness if you had to call out something, although I have no issues between 5800 and 6800 on both Alu and Carbon wheels in dry and wet, i.e they are about the same.

and now R5000 vs R8000 vs R9100 are meant to be even better and even more alike.

It's an aesthetics and financial decision more than logical.

And Ouch; that sounds like an expensive crash!

The lever may be available as a replacement part, but it sounds like you've already decided to replace both shifters..

Would you try to sell the damaged ones to defray the cost of new?

I think my body took most of the hit as I skid on a right hairpin bend at about 30mph and the bike came away from me. The rear derailleur and right pedal took most of the impact on the bike. I *think" the right shifter lever is just cosmetic damage and would rather replace just the carbon lever. If necessary I will need to buy the whole right shifter assembly for £100. Could have been worse for the bike, at least the derailleurs are relatively cheap. The frame and wheels are fine.

Bits of R7000 kit appear to be available now from UK and German retailers. Still not seen an entire groupset yet. I've settled for new cables and bartape this year and R7000 next hopefully....

Replacing the lever assembly looks straightforward with the right tools, but £100 seems annoyingly expensive when a pair of STIs complete is only £200.

Can you find somebody else who's crashed their left hand shifter and buy a pair between you??

Usually available on eBay in singles although I accept the R8000 is still quite new. Annoyingly the RH one is more expensive in most cases.
