What function do the upper stantions do on mtb forks?
As far as I can see they provide a cover for the air / oil shocks in each leg an a smooth slider into the bottom of the fork.
Reason for the question is one of my fork stantions has heavy wear, it is smooth and the seal isn't damaged, the forks seem to work ok so it only appears an ascetic thing

Keep your front wheel attached to your bike lol0

I guess you didn't put much thought into it? The bushes in the lower leg slide up the outside of the stanchions, its what controls the wheel path, plus any friction will impact the 'smoothness' of operation.
So the wear may well mean the front wheel isn't controlled properly so you may well get some twist and for and aft movement, plus the extra friction means it won't be acting as suspension as smoothly.
