Hi guys,

I have an old Viking vuelta which I want to put a new lease of life into with a new group set. I’m thinking of Shimano Tiagra 4700. Any idea on whether the bottom bracket that comes with the group set will work? Also how do I find out which type of bottom bracket I have already? And which one I need to replace it with.

Thanks for the help.

It might help if you gave us a brief idea of how old the bike is and what gear system is fitted to it currently.

In the absence of that I would think that it is most likely fitted with square taper bottom bracket with a 68mm British thread. Like this

To fit the Tiagra 4700 you will need a Hollowtech II bottom bracket like this

If you want to fit it yourself you will need the tools to remove the old chainset and bottom bracket (Crankset puller and BB removal tool) then you will have to buy a fitting tool for the HT II bottom bracket.

They are all fairly cheap so worth investing in so that you get more experience of fettling your bike.

Also plenty of YouTube videos on how to do the job. Like this

Only Viking Vuelta I know of is a very low end bike, less than 300 quid new. If this is the case you're probably better off buying an entire bike with a new groupset. For about the same price you'll get the kit you're after with a new, better frame included and you can sell the old bike for a little extra cash to make the new bike an even better deal.

If it is this one https://www.leisureoutlet.com/outdoor-p ... -bike-2014

Then I'd agree and there is little point on putting tiagra on it. You can buy a better bike for not that much more than the cost of the groupset. Some of the decathlon bikes are worth looking at.
