I’m in the market for some new shorts, so what are considered the best padded shorts ?

I prefer regular shorts as opposed to bib type.

Thanks

That's ironic - because bib shorts are considered the best type of padded shorts...

Rapha! Hands down, I have three pairs of Rapha bib shorts two pro team and one Brevet. They’re worth the money IMO other people may say different.

But these are the best shorts I have ridden

Very much this. The best starting point is to get bib shorts.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

+1 for Rapha. Brevet shorts are great although if I’ve one criticism it’s that the front is quite high which makes taking a mid ride pee a bit trickier than it needs to be.

Red White or Assos for me, could not get on with Rapha. Rapha do allow you to try their classic bibs for free.

Having owned Rapha, Assos, Santini and a few others, I came to the conclusion some time ago that Lusso were the best 'bang for buck' cycling shorts on the market. It's only my opinion but for the sort of distances that I tend to do (rarely more than 60 miles in a day) I have found them no less comfortable than the more expensive brands. I also agree with the others in preferring bibs but each to their own.

As above bibs are better fitting and more comfortable. The brand you buy depends on budget and which fits you best. Check the manufacturers size charts as a guide. I find castelli fit me best.

Sportful total comfort. They feel a bit hard at first but after the first 100km they bed in and are wonderful. Better made than the Castelli's I tried before and lasted longer.

I also don't like bibs, none of them fit me very well.

Short comfort is a very personal thing so you're always gonna get a bunch of different suggestions!

For me: Rapha/Assos, though I've heard wiggle's dhb are good and the cheaper sportful I've had have been good too.

I have a couple of these DHB shorts. I found them just as good as their Assos equivalent.

    +1.

I've had several different pairs of Lusso waist shorts and they're fine for the 3 or 4 hour rides I do. Bibs may be better for those who find the elasticated waist restrictive but it's not an issue for me. The Shutt bibs I have are nice but no better on me. I suspect there is some hype (and perhaps purchase justification) with expensive shorts although I'm sure some are going to be better than others.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.

I’ve owned Castelli, Assos, Lusso, Boardman, Descente, De Marchi, Shutt VR and Red White over the years. Assos have been consistently good but Red White The Bibs on price and performance have the edge for me. For long distance comfort, they are my favourites.
  • Guess it depends on your budget, doesn't it? I'd recommend DHB shorts any day :D

Rapha do take some getting used because they seem to move around differently to other bibshorts, they grip more to saddle is what I think happens, so they just feel a bit weird at times, but still perfectly comfy :)

As an aside, MF’s mate he was riding with today who is normally head to toe Rapha has just bought some Giordana ies and rates them higher than Rapha. 160 or so squiddlies for some shorts but if that’s your price range I and I and the MFs would take his word.

    I’m still with Lusso.

It's depends on your build, weight, and butt shape. No best for everyone. Period.

I've tried a few but the rapha pro team work the best for me, they are expensive, but if you wait for a deal you can pick them up at a more sensible price. Fit and pad are better than anything ive tried

My 2 cents would be Assos, RedWhite and Isadore. I really like the Isadore pad, it’s thinnish but very dense and comfortable.
  • Rivelo honister bib shorts for me. A big improvement in comfort over my Btwin shorts.

It all depends on what feels absolutely right. Of all the shorts I've tried the ones I'd take on a 150 mile ride are the Assos Equipe Evo. They look and feel 100% right.

Below that the others are within a few %. So the RedWhite, fab for the money. Ditto the Parentini Tiger (90m on the turbo today, all sitting down, didn't feel them at all). The Lusso a few % down again but a massive % saving overall. Ditto the Rivelo.

But, equally, for a person of "X given anatomy/weight/etc" they might have other views on what is the absolute best.
