I am thinking about going from a 2x10 to a 1x10 on my giant xtc advanced 27,5, since I never use the lower gears.
would it be possible to just put this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/dk/e ... prod113370, and removing the front shifter ?

(i'm pretty new to it)

Yes but you need to be sure that the crank axle will fit your bottom bracket. Trust me, that can be a can of worms.

Why not save a load of money and just remove the big ring. Then replace the small ring with a narrow-wide chain ring. To get what you want, you may have to remove both rings and put the new ring where the big ring was. Why use a narrow-wide? Both of your current rings are designed to shed the chain from one to the other. In other words the chain is DESIGNED to come off! A narrow-wide ring is designed to keep the chain on. Try the new ring to see if the new ratios suit your riding.

Then you can remove the front shifter and your front mech. You would be advised to shuffle around the spacers on your bottom bracket to get the new front ring as close to the centre line of your cassette as possible.

I can't say that everything I have written will 100% work for you as all bikes are different (it seems). But I'd give it a go.

PS: When replacing the gear, try a different size than the one in most use, maybe a bigger one.

Hi, Been thinking of doing the same conversion, currently run a 2x10 - 36x22, rear cassette is 11-36, but never use the the granny ring.
Was thinking of putting a 36t oval chainring on the front and getting an 11-42 rear cassette, which should give me a slightly easier low gear. The ratios of the cassette's are basically the same other than a couple of gears are 1t different.

If you never use the granny ring you must ride in a very flat area.

But if that is the case then your plan is fine except that the mech probably will not clear the cassette, resolved by a different mech or a drop out extender.

Not at all, the tracks and trails I ride have some pretty steep hills, but the 36x36 gear combo copes with them ok, sometimes only just though :D

I thinking/hoping I might get enough adjustment on the ‘B’ screw to sort the rear mech out.

So i completed the swap to a 1x10.

No problems to speak of as yet and the conversion was really easy to do.
I used the following components :-

    36t oval NW chainring - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/black-by-absoluteblack-narrow-wide-oval-single-chainring/rp-prod131089
    New ring bolts - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/brand-x-outer-ring-bolts-narrow-7075-alloy/rp-prod19227
    11/42 cassette - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-deore-hg500-10-speed-cassette/rp-prod162566
    New chain - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/kmc-x10-el-ti-nitrate-10-speed-chain/rp-prod120611

I managed to get away with winding the 'b' screw all the way in to give me enough clearance for the derailleur.

So now i have the same ratios for the harder gears and i've got 2 easier gears for the climbs.
      old 2x10 gear ratios (36t) 11/36 cassette 36/11 = 3.27 36/13 = 2.76 36/15 = 2.4 36/17 = 2.11 36/19 = 1.89 36/21 = 1.71 36/24 = 1.5 36/28 = 1.28 36/32 = 1.12 36/36 = 1
      new 1x10 gear ratios (36t) 11/42 cassette 36/11 = 3.27 36/13 = 2.76 36/15 = 2.4 36/18 = 2 36/21 = 1.71 36/24 = 1.5 36/28 = 1.28 36/32 = 1.12 36/37 = 0.97 36/42 = 0.85

You missed out the 22t gear ratios for the 2x.

They don't really matter as i didn't use them anyway, but just for you :-

    old 2x10 gear ratios (22t)
    11/36 cassette
    22/11 = 2
    22/13 = 1.69
    22/15 = 1.46
    22/17 = 1.29
    22/19 = 1.15
    22/21 = 1.04
    22/24 = 0.91
    22/28 = 0.78
    22/32 = 0.68
    22/36 = 0.61
