Morning All,

Have been using 1 x 10 for last few years and really happy with it but may need bigger cassette now.

Currently having XT rear mech (I think XT is medium cage?) with clutch and it works just fine with up to 36T cassette .

Want to install 42T cassette but the rear mech / chain is catching on two big rings (42 & 37) - adjusting the screw doesn't do much.

What rear mech do I need to get it running ??

Probably want to stick to shimano with clutch.

Was thinking of getting a new mech anyway, so it looks like good timing.

Many thanks

I am by no means an expert on this, but have you tried a longer B screw? The B screw is the one that moves the upper jockey wheel away fro the cassette. I only know to suggest it because I noticed that one of the manufacturers of 42T gears for adding to a cassette (in exchange for the 17t) included a longer B screw in the kit.

Longer b-screw and maybe a goat link if you want to keep your current RD.
Otherwise a new Deore M6000 RD.

Longer B screw doesn't always work, but is a good first thing to try. If it doesn't work, the new Deore M6000 has a 10 speed 11-42 and a mech to work with it. I wasn't able to get an XT to work completely with 11-42 on my old Bossnut, switching to M6000 worked perfectly.

Longer b screw may work but you end up with fewer chain links engaged., not a good thing.

Fit a hanger extender, cost about 1.50 if unsure, search my posts on this subject.

Been using one with sram x0 mech, not clutch mech, without any problems.

I went through the same upgrade.

Tried the "road fairy" (extended hanger) but really did not like the extra leverage it placed on the hanger.
(also be ware of the generic term for goats link, goats link do a couple of items in with similar names, one is a dropper that does not offset back in line if you get my drift).

I went with an 11 speed shimano SLX medium cage and it works fine with a 50t cassette with 32t up front (b screw only 3/4 of the way) - the 11 speed SLX will work fine with a 10 speed shifter (obviously you will only have 10 speeds as its the shifter that dictates the movement).

The beauty of this is when you do find a suitable 11 speed cassette on ebay for less than ½ price you just need to buy a 11 speed shifter and chain. Works fine - I have done it on my Bossnut and the kids boardmans (the kids are running 46t x 32t)

Is the extender standard or bike / mech specific??

It is supposed to generic to emulate the mech part so both shimano and sram mechs should fit, but on my specialised epic I had to remove a tiny chunk for it to fit.

That is interesting to know as i had to fit a radr cage to my 10spd xtr derailleur on my bike which is working great at the minute with the 10spd 11-42 cassette.

does that apply to the XT and other 11spd derailleurs with a similar cable pull ratio?

I cant say for sure Swod1 - Im no expert, only going off recent experience. The following are what I know works for sure:

    1) the 11sp SLX mech will work with 10 speed Deore Shifter on a 10sp 11t to 46t cassette with 32t front.
    2) the 11sp SLX mech will work with the 10 speed Zee Shifter on a 10sp 11t to 46t cassette with 32t front
    3) the 11sp SLX mech will work with the 11 speed SLX shifter on a 11sp 11t to 50t cassette with 32t front.

Re: No.3 - thats mine (the others are the kids) - I was originally on 10 speed cassette and 10sp deore shifter with the 11 sp SLX mech - I changed to an 11 speed cassette and shifter (with new chain) and became 11 speed - passing the old 10 speed down to one of the kids.

  • Been running a 42 cassette (or 36 with an expander sprocket, go through at least 2 or 3 a year due to Peak Distric grit wearing them down!) with XT and Zee derailleurs and a longer B screw for a couple of years now no issues at all.

Sounds good i'm currently using the 10spd HG500 11-42 cassette wear rate seems to be good as i have two chains that i change regularly kmc x10 el
