I'm halfway through installing a PF30 BB into my frame. I've noticed that one side is going in slightly wonky, what can i do to remedy this? It seems to be getting wonkier as i go in. The other side is now all the way in, whereas this side is halfway there.

First time i've actually done a pressfit install, and it was all going so well!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you using a proper press/installation tool? I thought these fitted together to make sure it went in straight.

Tried putting the cups in the freezer for a few hours to make them slide in easier?

I've replaced headset cups with a makeshift press (2 big washers and some M12 studding) and sometimes they wouldn't go in straight initially but seemed parallel once all the way in. This was on an old bike so I wasn't too bothered if it got damaged.

I did my CR1 headset cups with a Heath-Robinson affair off ebay. Just threaded rod, nuts, washers etc. Didn't notice one was going in slightly on the wonk till it suddenly straightened itself up with a loud crack  Damn near fouled my britches! I thought I'd just broken my new carbon frame. Luckily it was OK.

Can you take out the press and carefully tap the bearing straight hitting only the outer part?
  • Thanks for the prompt replies guys.

I couldn't remove it, but ended up putting it in a vice with the tool in place so i could tighten it from the one side, but spread the load (sounds worse than it was!). Did the job. Hopefully haven't gone any long term damage to the BB, but once it jumped into place I tightened it normally and it was fine.

I was using a BB tool, not the fancy Park one, but not too dissimilar to the shimano one. I think I need to be a bit more observant and make sure that it's definitely going in straight at the beginning.
