Disc rotor lockring woes
Hi, I am building a new bike and its almost done have just hit one snag which I need to sort out before it's ready to roll! I have some 12mm thru axle wheels and centrelock shimano disc brakes. The problem is on the front wheel in that the usual cassette tool won't fit over the axle as the metal wall is slightly too thick, and I can't use the alternative type of lockring with the teeth on the outside as the raised edge on this rubs agains the inside of the fork.
I *think* I need something like the Park Tools FR-5.2GT...could anyone confirm or offer an alternative suggestion?

Most cassette lockrings tools are not thin walled enough to be useful with thru axles. It does depend on your end cap though what if any tool will work.
If the other type of locking does not fit then that fork is rubbish and should not be on the market since it meant for thru axle hubs. A design flaw I think.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -
Not quite clear what you're trying to post? With centre lock discs, its usually an internal drive the same size as the cassette lock ring tool, or an external lock ring that doesn't use a cassette lock ring tool and uses a BB tool.

Yes that is known but the external type lockrings fouls the the fork.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Hi Malcolm this is on the Borg45s which I am trying to get on the Specialized S-works Roubaix frame.0

I have two Shimano cassette lockring tools that work fine on all the thru axle wheels I have. One has the model number TL-HG16 stamped on it, the other just says "Shimano UG Freewheel". The first one has a pin guide in the centre that fits down a quick release axle to keep the tool centred, the other doesn't, but they both fit over thru axles.0

Presumably the OP needs 6 bolt type disc wheels then?I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -

I have next to no experience with discs or thru axles, but I've read a near identical thread on here recently, and the answer was the thinner walled Park Tool, er, tool.0 -

Thanks very much, will give it a try.0

Just on the offchance I popped in to the LBS and they sorted me with a thin lockring with external teeth but without the lip which was catching on the fork.
TFFT, I can now ride it properly
Thanks to all for the advice.0 -
Glad that's sorted but still the problem here is the fork. If it that special it should come with a locking.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0
