Due to my hatred of front mechs, can anyone suggest an option for a road bike running a single ring under £1000?????

This might be an obvious answer, but why not just buy a bike you like then convert it to 1x?0

PX also have the Full Monty on offer in 1 x SRAM Apex with hydraulic discs

However you could push the boat out and sell your wife and kids (if you have any) and go for the 3T Strada ridden by the Aqua Blue Sport team in this season's pro cycling calendar

Boardman Team CX if you can find one. Comes with 35mm knobblies but a pair of 25/28mm road tyres will convert it nicely.0

Maybe not strictly a road bike, but the Planet X XLS SRAM Rival 1 with Vision 30 Wheels looks a bragain at £999.99.

Any bike can become 1x with a narrow wide chainring.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

But most people will need quite a wide range cassette on the back to go with the 44 or whatever on the front, which means a long cage or mtb derailleur.
I think shimano says a maximum of 32 tooth for the gs (medium cage), which is not enough for everyone on steep stuff.
Their spec is usually conservative and you will prob get away with 34 though.
Avoid ss altogether if you want a low gear for climbing.0 -
Thanks all for the advice - Planet X is certainly looking tempting0

i have a short cage record and chorus rd's shifting on a 11-32t cassette and either a 52T or 42T ring. 42T/32T is quite low.
I think if you use a R8000 RD for the 11-34T cassette with a single ring it will cope with an SRAM 11-36T cassette quite easily.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -
The crucial question is, what terrain are you riding in, this alone will give you better answers.
Flat, mountains, lumpy? Where are you riding most of the time ?Riding - Voodoo Bantu0
