Packing a helmet

I'm travelling to the US over the summer and will do some riding. Is packing my helmet in my suitcase a bad idea, if it's well padded - is hand luggage a better idea to keep my lid safe?

I'm not taking my bike, just helmet, pedals and clothing.

I've taken my aero helmet in hand luggage before now. I'd do that if you can.

I think it's safe enough in checked baggage, stuff your socks and underwear in there and pack it well in your suitcase. If you can carry a bottle of whiskey (or two....) then I think your helmet will be fine.

Always in hand luggage for me, and carefully looked after now. Had the roc loc plastic bits from my Giro break twice - once in the suitcase, once in hand luggage. Luckily both times on the way home. I think it's just flimsy.
