Hi,

I'm looking for a jersey for a trip to the South of France in summer, would appreciate some advice.

Obviously most companies now have a range of ultralight jerseys out there, but what surprises me is that they are often dark in colour (probably to mask the see-through nature of them), which seems counterintuitive.

So my questions for anyone with some experience:

Should I be be more concerned with colour or fabric of jerseys?
Do these mesh-style jerseys make that much difference? and do they offer any SPF protection, many don't state.
Does anyone have any recommendations for jerseys? Price doesn't matter too much, but I'd rather pay £50 than £100. I'd also rather not be see-thru and to have to suncream my torso before putting it on.

I'm looking at anything from this

You won’t appreciate this from a budget perspective but the rapha flyweight jerseys are excellent. Upf40 rated, very thin and wick very quickly. Well worth a go.

once you are moving, colour makes little difference - on the flat/descent the air will cool it, on climbs you can always unzip if necessary

the main think i like about lightweight jerseys is there's less fabric to hold sweat, it'll either run off or evaporate

clothing may have a upf rating (not spf)

upf tells you what proportion of uv gets through - upf 20 means 1/20th gets through, upf 50 means 1/50th gets through

fwiw castelli's climber's jersey has upf 16 fabric on the back, i've got one, it's great on really hot days, only downside is the pockets are a bit small

I’ve a Rapha Flyweight jersey, I paid about £45 in the sale IIRC, no way I’d pay full price. I imagine you can get them cheaper at the archive store or the place that sells all their end of line stuff on eBay.

I climbed Teide last year in it, in the sun it was 45 degrees and not a lot could keep me cool in that but this was good. I’ve worn it in the uk in 25 degree or so weather and it’s equally good here. It’s thin, good wicking properties and still has all the pockets. They sell
It is also available in dark colours which seems counterintuitive to me. I’d highly recommend it.

I would however give their Flyweight shorts a swerve.

My http://www.wiggle.co.uk/endura-fs260-pr ... ve-jersey/ is great for really hot days, far better at wicking away heat than my two https://www.merlincycles.com/lusso-line ... 81022.html

I’d echo what others have said regarding the lighter weight fabric. It certainly helps with keeping you cool compared to a regular jersey. I also have a Castelli climbers jersey and although it was only 18-23 today I felt a lot cooler than last Monday in similar temperatures in my usual Castelli Prologo jersey.

I live in Bangkok - so it's normally 30 to 32 degC and humid...

    Recommend deSoto skin cooler fabric
They used to do a plain and perfect white jersey, but the grey hive is good or this...

Also the skin cooler beanie is good for keeping sweat out of the eyes... and you may want to consider the long sleeve 'tri top' - same great material, no zip but three pockets in back & the long sleeve means you only really have to use sun screen on the back of your neck ;-) (and it's cheaper than the short sleeve zipped version)

Thanks for all your responses, I'll take a punt on a Rapha flyweight. I do quite like the green classic one.
