Rubbish Gear Shifters - Shimano SL-A050

Hi there, hoping someone can provide some advice. So I convinced my other half to let me get a road bike. She wasn't to keen but I found a cheap bike on E-bay. It was pretty much new, but had just been left outside so was not very good condition.
The components are rubbish, but I want to get onto the road using it and can't afford at the moment to replace them.
I have stripped to bike and am now putting it together, and have come to set up the gear. This bike came with Shimano SL-A050. Which mount to the handle bars.
Has anyone got any experience wit these, it is a 2 by 7.

Hi. You'd need to change the brake/shifters to something like Shimano Tourney STI's

Also seems the front mech might need changing due to pull ratios:

Factor in some new cables for gears and brakes (£20-25) and some new bar tape (£8) and if you can't fit them then about an 1-1.5 hours of local bike shop labour.
Might not be worth it in the long run?Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.
