Question About Repairing Carbon Spokes

Cheers - I am considering buying a used Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate wheel set. The very low price attached to them makes them very tempting even with the damage on them. I am generally pretty handy with things, and feel if I study the matter sufficiently that the damage looks repairable. The seller says the damaged wheel is 100% true, and the seller has a 100% positive rating. I have a set of lightbicycle.com carbon wheels. But that is the full extent of my experience with carbon wheels.....so not very extensive at all. Does this damage seem repairable? Or is the wheel set not worth looking into.

What's the worst that could happen there ? Oh. Death or lifetime paralysis.

Walk away. While you still can.

Okay thanks. These are helpful. I haven't bid yet btw, and have no commitment to anyone.

I'm glad I opened the thread. Thanks for the feedback.

Ya I don't think it can be required. In a spoke, it requires tensile strength, which means it need to be stretched. I don't think you can easily repair it in a way that would load the tension on to the fiber.

In all seriousness it is possible that this can be properly repaired.

Contact Jure at Berk Composites. He does a lot of repairs of Lightweight wheels which are all carbon spokes. If you want to check out his credentials look on the weightweenies forum.

The only thing is that he can be quite slow to reply so the auction may be over by the time you hear back and it's not cheap (£200), but he is based in Europe (Slovakia I think).

So person with no experience of working with carbon and very limited experience of carbon wheels wants to buy a set of broken carbon wheels and repair them after studying stuff off the internet.

Well that's going to end well.

I live in Beijing. So by the time I get them shipped to Europe and then here, or from the states to Beijing, then back to Europe, then back to Beijing....you get the picture.

MF I think you've touched a nerve

OP if you are wise you will avoid these wheels.
If not, and are desperately trying to save some pennies, you could try fixing them with selotape and then feedback how the repair goes... to your teeth following the inevitable faceplant.

Anything can be repaired. Whether it is financially viable is a slightly different matter. If you have access to a competent cf repair specialist this might be a bargain but if not then I'd suggest letting this one go.

If your based in China can not get a good price on Farsport / Lightcycle wheels. They still work out cheap in UK including shipping an import charges so must be (comparatively) pennies over there. Certainly less then a set of scrap Mavics off UK Ebay.
