I been coming up with a list of possible 1st time road bikes having tried some out with no luck and having a yet another look round,

I wonder what you think

Scott Speedster 20 2017

Ribble Sportive Racing Tiagra SE

Ribble Gran Fondo Sora

RT-58 V2 Alloy Endurance Bike

Planet X RT-80 SRAM 11 Rival Road Bike Last Love Edition (though this one went up in price the day i went to oder one so may have too see if comes dow again)

The planet x and the Scott i can go and try as shop near me.

Just not sure about the spec which one win over all i have an idea re the gears but as for wheels ect am not sure

So what you think or do have a better one to add to the list?

Have a look at Decathlon bikes.

Other than that - don't overthink it - you probably need to spend some time riding a bike, which will give you a taste of what you want. I wouldn't spent ages thinking that one of those bikes is a 'turkey' and it will fall apart after 60 miles - make sure you get the right size and get pedalling -

(come back on here in 18 months debating whether to go etap or di2 ! )

@kingrollo thanks for the post. Yes thats the over all plan if i like it and feel its right then it's the one for me.
Just getting a few views from others as to what they think over all. Will take a look at decathlon too can try them out for size too i have one near me.
  • I’ve had a sportive racing for 3 years now and can’t fault it for club runs and Sportives. It will make more sense upgrading components on a carbon frame down the line too.

I called into Ribble shop today and tried out a sportive the guy was really helpful and measured me up for one.
Emailed me the info well I was in the shop.

I can get the bike with one of the following groupsets

The question is which is best and is it worth the extra £95 difference for the gruop set?

    Shimano 11 Speed Groupset
    RS510 172.5mm 34/50 Chainset
    R8000 STI Levers
    5800 cassette
R8000 Short cage rear derailleur & Braze-On Front derailleu
    Sora 3000 Brakes
    HG601 Chain

    Shimano Tiagra 4700 Groupset - 10 Speed
    34/50 Compact Chainset
    12/28 cassette
    Short cage rear derailleur
    Tiagra brakes

Go for the better groupset but get them to swap out the brakes.

105 is well worth those 95 extra. The only negative of this bike are the brakes as others said, but you can replace them wih less than 100 euros so its not a deal braker

You'll be looking at the Ribble Sporting Ultegra SE special they have at the moment...

Well worth the extra £95. Its not 105, its a hotch potch of stuff, mostly R8000 Ultegra. But you can easily switch the missing bits over e.g. chainset & brakes over time if it bothers you and you see a decent offer; you'd be bang up to date on everything else.

Only thing I'd do is pay the extra £50 to upgrade to Mavic Aksiums over the stock wheels (which look like junk).
  • Definitely upgrade the wheels to the Mavics if you can. Sora brakes will be fine, although worth getting some decent pads such as swissstop to go in them and upgrading them down the line.

    well they both come with
Continental Ultrasport Rigid tyres 23mm but i was going to upgrade to the 25mm anyway
or other option is Schwalbe One Folding Tyre 23mm
