STAGE 5

AGRIGENTO - SANTA NINFA (Valle del Belice) 9 May 2018 / Wednesday / 153 km

This is the second of two - three star stages.
At first, the stage is played out on flat roads running along the coast, on the ss. 115 trunk road, with a slightly more complicated passage through the centre of Sciacca. The second half, instead, running entirely through the Valle del Belice, is more demanding, with a few long but mild categorised climbs. In the second part of the route, the roadway is narrowed and very worn out at points. Final kilometres: the route descends slightly until 2,200 m before the finish. Here, the stage course turns right and takes in a short uphill stretch (approx. 1,200 m), with ramps peaking at 12%. The final kilometre descends slightly at first, and then runs gently uphill. The finish line sits on a 250-m long and 7.5-m wide asphalt straight.

AGRIGENTO

Known as the City of the Temples because of its numerous Doric temples from the ancient Greek city standing in the so-called Valley of the Temples – recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site – it reached its height in the V century BC, before the decline that started with the war against Carthage. During the Punic wars it was conquered by the Romans. It was later dominated by the Arabs and then conquered by the Normans.

Another exciting finish then, with a few hours of scenery to start with.

The turns in the last 500m look interesting - just when they have got a bit of speed up again after that climb.

So basically the same as yesterday?

    I hope Woods nails it.
It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.

So, we get whole stage coverage today, including the Giro grid girls. :P
Unfortunately, it looks like a Kirby-Hatch-Kirby commentary again, so I guess I will be watching the finale with measured Italian delivery, again. :(

That viaduct was paid for by the EU apparently. Fascinating discussions on the Dutch comms.

Gazetta reporting that the safety motorbike accident before the stage was fatal.

A couple of minor chutes, as the pace finally begins to rise.

    Oh no another death?

    It seems so.
The start was reported as delayed, due to an on course accident.
Turns out it involved a safety outrider.

Slightly better news: Kirby isn't going to be around for the finish, today.

The bunch not really pushing yet, which may open the door to some of the sprinters.
