Matching spd-sl position to spd

I am changing from spd to spd-sl pedals and shoes. I would be grateful of advice on how to match the position of the new spd-sl cleats to my existing spds.
Do I match to the leading edge of the cleat for both systems or the mid point or somewhere else? I'm not really sure where to start.
I can compare both shoes side to side to get started.

Try to ensure the pedal spindle will be in the same position as before?

I'll be interested to know since I'm about to do the same thing
