Garmin 800 - corrupted activity

10 hours, 130 miles and 6000M of ascent into a ride my Garmin 800 turned off with no warning. Battery symbol was still green shortly before and roughly had 20% left. When trying to turn it back on it would begin to start up but then just turn itself off. When trying to upload the activity it either says the file is 'malformed' or 'there is a problem with the file'.

As you can imagine I'd really like to get the data back as it was a fair way into an 'Everest' attempt! I've tried a few things but I think something a little more complex is required to get the data back...any advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for your time!

Sorry for your loss - no data file, then the ride didn't happen ;-) Happened to me after 22 hours...

I had a similar problem. Can you access the .fit file when you plug into a USB cable?

Try this online fix site. It worked for me

    http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl

    Good luck!!

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Is that like consolation, but when you wish upon a star that your activity wasn't corrupted?

    You could try this: http://fitfilerepairtool.info/
You have to pay for the software though. The free demo should let you know if it would work. I bought this so I could try and recover the data for you if you wish.

My sympathies - I had exactly the same thing with an Edge 510. Was on holiday in South Africa & hired a bike to do a bucket list ride from Cape Town, through Chapmans Peak Drive & down to the Cape of Good Hope. All was well until literally 50m from the end of the ride when boom - no warning, blank screen. Switched the piece of sh1t back on to discover I still had 70% battery, but no sign of any ride data. Total bummer - not like I was going to be able to re-do the ride in a hurry. I just recorded another few miles back to the team car, sulked like a toddler until I got some beer in me then proceeded to take my anger out on Castle lager.

Anyway, once at home & linked to a laptop I tried the Kieswetter one. No joy. Tried a couple more & nothing seemed to work. In the end I went to the link below & used the combine files option to upload the corrupted fit file along with the next one (the ride back to the team car) & hey presto I had a file that was happy to download to Strava. It was missing about a mile of distance & the metres climbed was way off, but I can live with the former & the latter is easily correctable.

Side note: about a month later, shortly after buying an Elemnt Bolt (Gary Garmin had pulled the same trick three times by now & is refusing to automatically download rides to Connect & Strava,) the offending unit defected on me during a MTB ride - not even on a bumpy section, I just looked down & it wasn't there any more. I had absolutely no sense of it leaving the bar mount / bike (didn't see or hear anything to alert me to its escape) & couldn't see any sign of it when backtracking along my route (can only have happened in a quarter mile section). Anyway, long story short. Sod Garmin - the Wahoo has been flawless.

I once had a corrupted activity and which would not upload to Strava. I tried most of the methods mentioned above to no avail, but Strava fixed it for me.

I'm not sure if it is a service for Strava Premium members only, but I was able to send it to the Strava helpdesk, who fixed it and returned it. They turned it around really quickly too - I was impressed.
  • Happened to me the other week on my Bolt. Recovered the fit file via one of the above mentioned sites, and it was ok.
  • Same thing when I fell off and broke my leg. Double-gutted: those miles didn't count, and I have no way to know how fast I was going.

Both the Gamin and the bike were unhurt by the crash, luckily.

Fitfiletools just saved me on a corrupted file. Was a time error.

Strava added another 500 miles at 100mph but was easy to crop it off
  • Just completed my first 10 mile time trial and the file is corrupted. I've never had this with my garmin before

Showing 10 miles on my garmin. Then i choose the activity on the garmin to view details and everything is blank/zero.

Upoading to strava and the first 1.7 miles are there but it's only a 4kb file. Can anything be done?

    Cheers guys

    Follow all the above instructions.
  • I've tried most of the above.

That german site doesn't seem to do anything.

Can't get the Fit File Repair Tool thing to work

I've tried fitfiletools.com - all the different options - to no avail

Tried combining it with the ride before/after/both and nowt.

The last 8 miles just don't seem to exist.
