Going Tubeless with Roval SLX 24 Rims

Hi,

I’ve recently bought a Specialised Roubaix which comes with Roval SLX 24 rims (which are tubeless ready), and I want to fit my Hutchinson Sector 28 tubeless tyres on them. I’m trying to understand if the rim tape that comes installed on the wheels is tubeless tape or do I need to re-tape them with tubeless rim tape. They told me in the shop that it was, but my experience with previous “tubeless ready” wheels is I’ve still had to tape them as they’ve only come with standard tape fitted.

I don’t want to remove the rim tape only to find it was sealed, but I don’t really want to go through all the hassle of putting the Hutchinson tyres on (which are sods to seat) only to find I need to order some tubeless rim tape to start again.

I’m planning on using my Stan’s valves that I’ve currently got on some Stan’s Grail rims, any reason these wouldn’t be compatible with the Rovals?

Thanks,

Neil

Tubeless tape is an adhesive heavy duty plastic tape... if that's what you've got, then fine, if you've got an elasticated tape then it's not bubeless... equally if it's cloth, then it's not tubeless

  • Hi, and thanks for the response.

The tape on the Rovals doesn't look like 'normal' rim tape, but neither does it have the insulating tape appearance of tubeless tape. However, as it is, I took the plunge yesterday and tried a tubeless setup using the existing tape, and I'm glad to say they've held their pressure overnight so it looks like the wheels are sealed :) .

How have the Sector 28s on the SLX 24s been working out on the Roubaix? Curious to see if you have measured the tires with calipers. Also wondering what psi you run on the tubeless setup on tarmac and on gravel/dirt.
    Thanks,

ive seen quite a lot of these roval wheels in sportives and triathlons this year, they look good and are very light, It might be the riders of course but it was noticeable how many rims had failed.
