As I understand it - there are three seatposts from Brompton. (there are lots of third party posts out there too).
There's another option, which is to get a standard Brompton seatpost and modify it by cutting off the tapered top section and cutting a short vertical slot in the top of the remaining part. You then fit a regular (non-Brompton) seatpost and seatclamp clamp into this, as if it was a frame tube. This has three benefits:
    1. You can now use any saddle.
    2. You can adjust the overall length so that the saddle is in exactly the right position when the seatpost is fully extended.
    3. There's no limit (within reason) to the overall length.
    Pannier, 120rpm.

Some great advice there, guys. Thanks!

My plan, as it stands, is to go for an S2L, as I don't anticipate riding any particularly steep climbs. I'll go for the stiffer suspension and I'll get the luggage block put on. I'd ideally like a front rack that can take an instrument case (I'm a musician). I'm not sure whether the Brompton one could handle that. I notice H&H do a titanium one, but it looks like they might not be available over here. I, too, intend to stick some M520 pedals on. I had planned to put a Specialised Romin saddle I have on, but maybe that won't work. At 5' 10 I'm not sure whether I'll be ok with the standard seatpost.

I'll make sure to test ride a few in the Covent Garden store, but I can't imagine I'll be able to find any significant inclines around there. My friends will let me have a go of one of their S2Ls in my town.

    :-)

I'd maybe take your bag to the Brompton shop and see what they suggest. I don't think anyone sells a French Horn attachment for Bromptons yet...

Standard post might be ok. Depends on leg length rather than height though correlative of course. Romin should be ok too.

French Horn? If I were you, I’d stick with a gig bag & good insurance.

My insurance is good and I have a nice backpack style case, but I want to avoid a sweaty back and discomfort.

I went into the Brompton store yesterday and tested my horn case on their front rack and it’s way too tall. I can get a case with much lower height that I’m pretty certain will work on a M or H build, but I’m not sure about a S. having never ridden an S, I have to admit my preference for one is mostly based on aesthetics. Being able to carry my horn on the front is the most important factor, really. I’m wondering about going for a M and then buying a 3rd party low rise bar, to look a little less dorky, or even a H and then fitting a flat bar.

The guy in the shop I talked to told me that if he was just using a Brompton for either end of a train commute he’d opt for a M, as it’s noticeably more comfortable and handles better.

Doesn't look as good though.

MRS - No need to keep repeating yourself - I think we've all got the message that you don't like Bromptons...
