Tubeless sealant

I've just gone tubeless on my summer bike (ksyrium elite ust).

I've used over half the supplied sealant on the install - what do I do now, periodically top up, or do you take the tyres off after a certain period and clean and re-seal?

I've tried to look through all the bumf that came with them but I got fed up...

If your not too concerned with weight you can just top it up and not worry about cleaning the dried sealant out.I've got mavic ust wheels too, I think what I will do is take the tires off and clean the rim every other time I need to add new sealant. I've opted to use orange seal, which some people argue is the best sealant, but it is only supposed to last for about a month. So this means I'll take my tires off every two months and clean them.

I have tubeless on both summer and winter bikes.
Once a year I taken them off, clean them out and reseat them with new sealant.

Every couple of months (or when I remember) I try to shake or spin the wheel to see if I can hear any sealant still inside, if so I leave it. If not, I add a bit more.

I use milKit valves with my tubeless setup https://milkit.bike/en. They're absolutely brilliant for checking the amount and/or quality of your sealant and for topping it up without having to break the seal.

  • I find if you take tyres off, you have to replace the rim tape to get a good seal.
I generally top up every month or two
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

I very rarely take the tyre off, only do so if I've had a bad puncture that needs a further repair with a patch at home. You can check the sealant level by removing the valve core, place the valve at the 6 o'clock and use a piece of wire poked down into the valve core to check the sealant level. I did read somewhere that you can also check the sealant level by poking a pin through the inflated tyre to check that it seals, though I wouldn't want to deliberately make even more holes in my tyres so I haven't tried this one!

How do you get the valve core off without all the sealant filling the presta valve during deflation?

I always have the valve at the top, when I remove the core
Never had a loss of sealant as yet
  • Apparently there's now a sealant available that doesn't dry out?

+1 for milkit kits. You can check ,add or remove fluid with tyre still on.
